How Often Should You Wash Your Car?

Some car owners wash their cars daily whilst others wash theirs weekly.  Then there are those others that never wash, until the car is creaking under the heavy weight of grime, clay and dust.  Who is wrong and who is right?  When is the right time to wash your car?

There is no hard and fast rule when it comes to how often you should wash your car. Here at South East Vehicle Valeting however, we advise our customers to wash their cars every two weeks under normal circumstances.

There are, however, many factors that can prompt you to wash your car more or less frequently than two weeks.

If you are living in a part of the country with industrial areas, oceans, construction sites or lots of trees, your car will be exposed to salt, dust, tree sap, bird droppings etc. In such a situation, you will need to wash your car more regularly.

Car usage frequency and typical driving distance

Do you drive your car to work each day? How far is the driving distance? Driving your car regularly obviously exposes it to more environmental hazards, which will mean more frequent washing. In some cases, the car will look very unsightly by the time you return from work and will require a quick wash for the next day. Similarly, if the car sits in the garage for most days of the week, there is nothing wrong with washing once a month or once every six weeks.

What kind of weather is your car exposed to every day? Heavy rains, sun, heat, excess cold, heavy winds, acid rains etc. are all kinds of weather that require regular car washing. In fact, some of those weather conditions require waxing of your car for truly adequate protection.

Vehicle storage

Do you park your car in a closed garage or do you park in a driveway? Are there trees around it? Is the street paved or is it dusty?  If you normally park your car under trees, you will be dealing with bird droppings and tree sap more than usual which will require more regular washing.

Preferred car appearance

Some people never feel comfortable driving in a car unless it is showroom shiny or insanely neat.  In that case, there will be need for a more regular washing and waxing of the car to keep up those appearances!

One thing is certain though, leaving your car to accumulate dirt to the point of it attracting sympathy is detrimental to its health and long term value. Even if you are not faced with any special circumstances, it is best to ensure your car is washed at least twice a month and waxed at least once every 90 days. This will preserve the physical appeal of your car whilst protecting its long term resale value.
